In this post I am going to explain about how to enable Grayscale Printing in Canon Pixma MP250 series printer . You can refer to my tutorial here in case you want to install the printer and scanner on Ubuntu and any other Linux distro .
To enable the Grayscale printing just follow the following steps .
1. Click System –> Administration –> Printing .
2. Now right click on your printer and select properties .
3. Now select Job Options
4 . Now scroll down to the bottom .
5. At the bottom you will see a text box . In that text box add “CNGrayscale” (without qoutes) and click on Add button .
6. Once you click add there will appear another text box right above the first text box . So in the second text box add “TRUE” and click on apply .
Thats all , now your printer will print in Grayscale mode . In case you want to print in color mode just change the TRUE to FALSE .
If there is something that you did not understand , you can ask me in the comments .

I am glad that you liked the tutorial. For other options you can refer to the manual at canon site for your printer.

Did you find out about “CNGrayscale” in the Canon manual? I’ve found some manuals for the Canon PIXMA MP240, but they mention nothing about such things! I found some info on a German site about such options (http://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Canon-Drucker#Zusaetzliche-Eintraege-in-Druckertreiber). For example, it mentions there “CNQuality”, but I don’t know what value to type in to make this work. In the case of “CNGrayscale” we had to type in TRUE, but what would we write in there for “CNQuality”?

I have a Canon Pixma MP620. I usually enable grayscale printing using the “printer settings” dialogue box to save ink. however, frequently when i disable or uncheck the grayscale option to print in color, it still prints in grayscale. any tips on that? thank you!

I have never used that model, but I will see what I can do to help you solve your problem.

Thanks for this tip. It worked for my Canon MP240 printer. I’ve now got grayscale up and running. Just one problem, though – when I change the saturation percentage in the options, it makes no difference! The resulting print out looks just the same as when the saturation was set at 100%. Very strange.

May be that feature is not supported.

The feature of ‘saturation’ is indeed supported by the Canon MP240. The driver from TurboPrint enables this feature. It must be a mistake in the driver from Canon – they clearly intended for this feature to work as they put a check box in there!
Basically, the free driver supplied by Canon is a bit sloppy. I mean, why on earth make us add in weird bits of code just to get some basic features working?! For someone who knows what they’re doing, it would take five minutes to get absolutely all the features working properly! The guys behind TurboPrint must be delighted that the manufacturers can’t be bothered with this!

I just added the “CNGrayscale” text box to my IP3600 options. It works, thank you harbhag!
Tomorrow I’ll apply this to my Mum’s IP1900 :). We all use openSUSE here. Cheers!

Thanks so much!
My MP250 now runs grayscale in PCLinuxOS.
I was just about to dump this thing as I don’t have any real need for color and don’t want to invest in the color cartridges just to print black, they’re to dang expensive as it is.

Hi, I’ve added a CNGrayscale option and set it to true, but I still can’t print in black and white. My printer model is MP258 and I’m using fedora17. By the way, I noticed that there is a “print-color-mode” under the “CNGrayscale” option, and it is set to color, I can’t remove it nor set it to monochrome. Also, under the Printer options, and under Printer Features Common, there is a “Ink type” option which is set to CMY color, no other choices.
Please help. Thanks.

Hello, I used this option for my IP2600 under Ubuntu and it worked. However, when I switch CNGrayscale to “false”, the printer does not print in color anymore. Actually even removing the option form the printer properties, the printer does not print in color anymore. I’m afraid I’ll have to reinstall the driver. Any help?

Hi sorry to be dumb but I have a mac and use their OS and I can’t find System -> Administration -> Printing anywhere…is it different on a mac? The greyscale option isn’t available anywhere in the printer dialogue box either but I’m desperate to figure out how to print in black and white only. Any help would be very welcome…
